Heart of the Walrus

Tursaansydan or mursunsydan ("Walrus Heart") is an ancient symbol used in Northern Europe. It was especially popular in Lapland. Some say it was used on the drums of the Sami shamans. The symbol dates back to prehistoric times and includes a swastika.

Tursaansidan was believed to bring good luck and protect against spells and was used as a decorative motif on furniture and wooden buildings in Finland. In the 18th century, the simple swastika became more popular in Finnish wood ornaments than the more elaborate tursaansidan.
