85 Ohm Tattoos: Meaning and Tips
Om is a popular design for both stick tattoos and tattoos (homemade designs made with a simple needle and ink) as well as regular tattoos. The beauty and elegance of the Sanskrit character ॐ is well known. As with unalome tattoos (tattoos of religious symbols, mostly from Theravada Buddhism, which represent the path to enlightenment), Om designs have a lot more meaning than you might think! This is why, if you are considering getting a tattoo with this symbol, knowing its origin could potentially prevent you from misusing it!
Religious origins
It is generally accepted that Om is of Hindu origin, but it would be more correct to point out that it comes from Vedanta, the fundamental philosophy of Hinduism. However, this symbol is present in many Eastern religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and the Sikh religion. It is a sacred song, mantra and icon.
Today it is also popular in Western culture, where it is generally considered a non-religious symbol associated with yoga.
Meaning of tattoo
Om is an ambiguous symbol. Although it is often written OM, this sound is rather composed of three syllables: AOM, each of which has its own meaning. They represent respectively the word, spirit and breath of life (prana). In general, they personify a living spirit.
Where to place the Om tattoo
Be careful, because not all parts of your body are suitable for Om tattoos, especially if you attach importance to their religious meaning! It is important to avoid tattoos below the waist (legs or feet). In some cultures, such as Hinduism, these body parts are considered impure. Wearing such a sacred symbol on the leg could be considered an insult.
However, although Om has a religious meaning, you do not need to be of a particular religion to get this symbol tattooed. Given the many ohms values, you can choose your own!
