What the High Priest presents in the Tarot - card description

In many modern decks, the High Priest (hereinafter also the Hierophant) is depicted with his right hand raised in a gesture that is considered a blessing - two fingers pointing to the sky and two fingers pointing down, thereby creating a bridge between heaven and earth. This gesture indicates a kind of bridge between deity and humanity. In his left hand, the figure holds a triple cross. The High Priest (the figure depicted on the card) is usually male, even in decks that take a feminist view of the Tarot, such as the Mother of the World Tarot. The Hierophant was also known as the "Teacher of Wisdom".

In most iconographic representations, the Hierophant is depicted on a throne between two columns, symbolizing Law and Freedom, or obedience and disobedience, according to various interpretations. He wears a triple crown, and the keys to Heaven are at his feet. Sometimes this is shown with believers. This card is also known as the High Priest, which is the equivalent of High Priestess (see High Priest Card).

Meaning and symbolism - fortune telling

This card is a symbol of piety and conservatism. Most often this means a person with great authority, not necessarily a clergyman - also, for example, a teacher. This is due to the need to get professional advice or help in solving problems related to the clergy and religion. It could also be a general interest in spiritual things or a need for forgiveness.
