Scythe

The scythe sometimes crashes into the hourglass. Some Freemasons perceive the hourglass and scythe as a single symbol. In the old days, the scythe was the standard tool for cutting grass and harvesting.

In Europe and Asia, the scythe is considered a symbol of the Angel of Death or the Grim Reaper. In Freemasonry, the scythe is a symbol of the time in the destruction of the institutions of mankind. It symbolizes the end of our time on Earth.

Masons are taught that since we do not know the exact time of death, it is important to use the time given by God to become better people. The scythe also symbolizes immortality. Freemasons believe in immortality .

Earthly bodies are temporary vessels that will eventually perish, but our souls will live forever. Therefore, according to the teaching of the craft, death reunites a person with fellow Freemasons who met death before him.
