Owl Symbol

Owl Symbol

Choctaw Owl Myth: It was believed that the Choctaw deity Ishkitini, or the horned owl, roamed the night, killing people and animals. When ishkitini screamed, it meant sudden death, such as murder. If "ofunlo", which means the screeching of an owl, was heard, it was a sign that the child in this family would die. If "opa", which means a common owl, was seen sitting in the trees near the house and shouted, it was a premonition of death among the closest relatives.

There were so many tribes of American Indians that one can only generalize the most common meaning of the symbol or drawing of an owl. Native American symbols are still used today as tattoos and have been used for various reasons and have been depicted on numerous objects such as wigwams, totem poles, musical instruments, clothing and war paint ... Indian tribes also used their own colors for symbols and drawings depending on the natural resources available to make Native American paints. For more information see " Meaning of bird symbols " .
