Ihtis

Ihtis - This word in ancient Greek means fish. Ichthys is one of the most recognizable symbols of Christians. This symbol consists of two intersecting arcs that resemble the profile of a fish. Ichthys is also known by names such as "Fish Mark" or "Jesus Fish".

The value of ichthys

The word Ichthis (ΙΧΘΥΣ) consists of the ancient Greek words:

Ι YOU,  Jesus  (Iēsoûs) - Jesus

Χ RISTOS,  Christ  (Christ) - Christ

Θ ΕΟΥ,  Θεοῦ  (Theoyu) - God

Υ VIRUS,  Son  (Hyiós) - Son

Σ ΩΤΗΡ,  Savior  (Sōtér) - Savior

Which can be translated into the sentence: "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior."

This explanation, in particular, is given by Augustine Hippopotamus (who lived in 4-5 AD - one of the fathers and teachers of the Church).

Early version of the symbol

An early version of the symbol - created by combining the Greek letters ΙΧΘΥΣ, Eph.

However, the connection of this symbol with Christianity is not connected only with the above-mentioned arrangement of letters. Fish has always been the hallmark of Christians ... Pisces are found many times in the Gospels, often in a symbolic sense.

In the seventies, "The Fish of Jesus" began to be used as an icon of modern Christianity. Today we can often see him as sticker on the back of the car or how necklace - so the owner is a Christian.
