How our body jewelry works at Pierced

At Pierced we sell a wide range of jewelry both in our studios and online. Different types of jewelry are designed for different types of piercings and lifestyles. Whether you want something for everyday wear or for special occasions, we have it for you! Keep reading to find out about the different jewelry we have to offer, as well as how to determine which type of jewelry suits you best!

Threadless decorations

Threadless jewelry is the leading standard for jewelry in the piercing industry today. It offers a wide range of size and stud options, allowing it to be universally worn with a variety of piercings.

"Threadless" refers to the connection method used in this decoration. As the name suggests, there are no threads. The decorative head has a strong pin that protrudes to fit into the rack. This pin is bent by your piercer and the stress caused by the bending of the pin inside the pin is holding the jewelry together.

The stronger the bend, the denser the decorative head is inside the post. Much of our interest in threadless jewelry comes from the inherent safety feature they offer. If your jewelry gets caught on something, the connection must come loose before the leather breaks.

Since there is no thread, no turning is required to remove it. You just prop up the post and pull the head out of it. Sometimes this is easier said than done, as over time the dried blood and lymph in the healing process can harden between them, making them difficult to remove. If you need to remove or reinstall any of our jewelry in an existing piercing, we offer these services free of charge.

Jewelry with internal thread

Jewelery with internal threads is threaded and will require twisting to remove. When unscrewing jewelry, remember: "left is free, right is strong." We have a few decorative overlays in this style, but we mostly see it used in belly button, nipple, genital, and oral jewelry.

If you wear jewelry with internal threads, check the tightness every 3-4 days. We usually advise you to do this in the shower when your hands are clean.

Jewelry with internal threads differs from the generally accepted understanding of jewelry with carvings. Instead of a post with visible threads, there is a ball that is screwed into the post. It's safer for your piercing because there are no external threads to cut through and rip through the wound you're inserting the jewelry through.

Tops with female threads only fit posts the same size as the threads, so they are not as versatile as unthreaded jewelry.

Clickers

This type of ring is most commonly referred to as a "clicker" because it opens and closes with a click. There is a small loop on one end and a zipper on the other end. We love clickers because they are the easiest to uninstall and reinstall for clients, and there are an endless number of styles.

Removal is pretty simple. You tighten the ring body and open the latch. Be sure to be careful not to damage the hinge mechanism or yourself.

Seam Rings

To open the seam ring, you will fasten both sides of the ring in the seam and twist them sideways. Sometimes people make the mistake of pulling the two ends of the ring apart, causing the ring to deform. This is definitely a tricky move for most clients so we highly recommend visiting us at one of our studios to help you.

In-seam rings are great for places where you'd like to wear thinner jewelry, or places you know you're not going to change often. Because they don't have a complicated hinge mechanism, you'll find they're often less expensive than their clicker counterparts.

Fixed beaded rings

These rings use the same open/close method as the seam rings, but instead of a clean seam, you will see a bead or decorative group on the seam.

Captive Beaded Rings

Captive rim rings have a double-socket collar that is held in place by pressure applied to them from both ends of the ring. Most often, tools are required to install and remove this decoration. Pierced is a completely disposable studio so we don't always have the right tools for this.

Now that you know all the types of jewelry we offer at Pierced, it's time to find your size! If you have the opportunity to visit one of our studios, our staff will be more than happy to assist you with the measurement.

Although, if you can't get into the studio, it doesn't matter! We have created a complete guide on how to size jewelry at home. Click here to learn how to measure your body jewelry.
